My Only Son
J.C. Munro
My
only son is 21, he's tall and strong and swift of mind
He has a girl his first true love, God grant to them the gift
of time
I have never known a war, and he's heard only shadowed stories
I fear they'll call and he will go in search of foolish, fatal
glories
Now
is the time to leave it all behind
The sins our fathers brought to pass in times passed out of mind
Now is the time to say enough's enough
No more to send our children out to kill and die for us
You
men who hide beneath the hood, you steel-eyed girls behind the
veil
You look out from the printed page and chill me to my very soul
Moved by hatreds scarce remembered, love of God or greed for wealth
Fear that's fed on lies and secrets, sown in darkness, raised
in stealth
Now
is the time to leave it all behind
The sins our fathers brought to pass in times passed out of mind
Now is the time to say enough's enough
No more to send our children out to kill and die for us
My
only son is 21; I'd like to know him as a man
I see compassion grow and blossom, I'd like to keep him if I can
Allah, Buddha, Jesus Christ, all stand for love and brotherhood
And yet I see on every hand, such evil in the name of good
Now
is the time to leave it all behind
The sins our fathers brought to pass in times passed out of mind
Now is the time to say enough's enough
No more to send our children out to kill and die for us
