Aaron Sherritt - Monologue
John C Munro
As
tall as the tall trees that touch the sky by Greta
As wild as the wild rains that scourge the northeast plains
He ran with Joe when Joe was young and ran the troopers ragged
And talked of Ned as one who was above the rest
They came to him with whispered oaths and promises unfettered
To turn his coat and turn his back for paltry gains
He took them here and there and told them tales that left them
staggered
And built a legend better than the best
Joe's
mother found him sleeping in the trooper's camp at dawn
And all the time she'd looked to him to bring the warning
He'd sought the hand of young Miss Byrne for many months beside
Now here he lay with those who'd do them wrong
The word was out, the boys then knew the boy they knew was gone
Like mist upon the Merri Creek at morning
But history and loyalty were firmly on his side
And by his side they thought they still belonged
[But
spy he was and spy he stayed and moved to El Dorado
To watch Joe's house and hope to find the pot of gold
To catch a glimpse of former mates and then trade in their souls
But loneliness came creeping, as he'd wait
For he'd lost his friends and worst of all he'd lost the love
of Joe
The one he cared for most, the one he'd sold
Who'd written to him holding out a chance to join the four
Who'd given him a chance to change his fate
His
mind began to falter as he sought for some release
Lost family and friends lost those who paid his way
He talked of what he'd like to do to balance up the score
But he talked too much and too unwisely said his say
So Ned sent Joe and Dan down to his house to draw the police
But the pair had hatched a plan along the way
Against his captain's orders Joe Byrne left him on the floor
They left Aaron Sherritt dead and to Glenrowan made their way
